Baby boy abandoned by suspected shoplifter in Greenburgh

By ERNIE GARCIA AND SHAWN COHEN

THE JOURNAL NEWS

(Original Publication: October 29, 2007)

Editor's note: An earlier version of this article misstated Suzette Gruber's age. She is 39.

HARTSDALE - A baby boy was abandoned at a clothing store last night after two women suspected of shoplifting ran away.

The infant was left in his stroller as the women ran out of the T.J. Maxx at 435 Central Ave. just before 6 p.m., police said.

"The mother panicked ... and just took off," Lt. Desmond Martin of the Greenburgh police said at the scene.

"It's sad," he said.

Police had not released the mother's name, but The Journal News has learned she is Suzette Gruber, 39, of Ely Avenue, the Bronx.

Police said the two women fled the store, running southbound.

The panicked woman left her purse and cell phone in the stroller, so police were able to contact the baby's father, who came to the store in the Dalewood Shopping Center around 7 p.m., police said. He was taken in a police car to police headquarters. Martin said the man was not under arrest.

Martin said police searched the immediate area for the women, but did not find them.

Three Greenburgh police cars were parked outside the store. An ambulance arrived just before 7 p.m., as police were still interviewing employees inside.

Several employees told The Journal News they were not allowed to discuss the incident. One said a baby had been abandoned by the women.

Police put the baby, still in a stroller, into the back of the ambulance. A female officer was shaking a baby rattle, trying to keep the child happy.

At the Greenburgh police station last night, the baby's gurgles and coos emanated from the back offices and he sounded like he was in a good mood.

The baby's stroller concealed vases, teapots and knives valued around $180.

On March 15, Gruber was charged with petty larceny and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. She was accused of stealing $272 worth of clothes from the H&M store in the Galleria mall, 100 Main St., White Plains police said. Gruber's 14-year-old daughter and 2-week-old son were with her at the time.

The outcome of those charges against her could not be determined last night.

real nice

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
