maybe it's because people tend to turn to God with more strenght in their time of need?

precisely...religion offers hope to the hopeless...many times religion promises things like an afterlife...its pretty easy to see why an afterlife would seem more appealing to someone who is always struggling than it would to someone who lives on easy street

lower class children, in general, are taught that they should not question authority the way that upper class children are...this relates to the type of labor that each class typically performs...if a parent is always struggling to make ends meet, clearly they are not going to teach their child that it is a wise idea to quit their job if the situation is not 100% ideal

this can also relate to views on religion

but a good psychologist knows that correlation does not equal causation...in essence, im speculating and nobody can say whether one causes the other

That is very true. When people have money, they tend to become more greedy and focus on power and creating more wealth. They lose sight of the big picture and think that they can do it all on their own and that everyone else should be able to as well and are very self centered. I would like to see how this relationship relates with depression rates. I have found that the wealthier a person is, the more empty and alone they feel and they just buy things to fill that void. Has anyone else ever noticed this?

I think that great wealth may lead to a feeling of "what else is there?" The Beatles, at the height of their fame, went looking for spirituality in the Himalayas. Bill Gates, who can buy whatever he wants whenever he wants it, seems to be understanding the true value of money. I know that if I were him, I would be thinking, "What do I want to be remembered for? That I had some really cool houses? Or that I eradicated malaria in Africa?"

Material distractions can and do interfere with our relationship with God. :)

Then explain NOT having a relationship with God AND not having material wealth.....

They're praying to God for money.

Then after they get the money, they stop going to church... :)

People turn to religion for different reasons. Many find it as a way to a better life. Praying to god to get wealth. Those who already have wealth are more likely to see it as a result of free will, not an action of God and are less likely to see God in that way. That doesn't mean a rich person wont be religious, if they are religious, its likely to be for different reasons.

You definetly don't need religion to help you to be a moral or just person. Sometimes religion can limit your perspective, you may be moral and just in your faith, but you are not very open or accepting of other possibilities.

I agree with that. I think spirituality is something that is separate from morality...more to do with an enlightenment of mind and the heart. People seek to fill what is empty...a thirst for something larger than themselves.
