The Supreme Court refuses to hear a lawsuit from an alleged victim of brutality by the CIA. The decision is seen as a setback for civil libertarians.

that's effed up..

Secrecy rule prevails

so, in order to catch terrorists, it doesn't matter if they abduct and torture the wrong guy?! #######

Didn't you catch Dubya saying that the U.S. doesn't torture because.....we don't torture people. His logic is circular and that is the best you can say about him.

If we beat someone OR allow them to be beaten while in our custody--that isn't torture because we did it or we allowed it.

Hey! People! We are torturing people! Somehow we have allowed ourselves to get into the mindset that not all people are equal and some people deserve to be tortured. #######????

What effed up about it? That a suspect was interrogated.

Suing the CIA. Now that is ridiculous. Why not sue God..

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

was unlawfully detained.. and now, not even an 'oops, we fukced up, you ain't a terrorist, sorry for the inconvenience'

According to his complaint, he was then blindfolded, taken to an airport and stripped of his clothes by a team of masked men. He said they drugged him and chained him inside an airplane, and he was flown to Afghanistan, where he was held in a CIA-run prison for five months.

Only then did intelligence agents conclude they had the wrong man. He was not Khalid al-Masri, a wanted terrorist and a member of Al Qaeda's Hamburg cell that organized the Sept. 11 attacks on New York and Washington.

American officials did not apologize to El-Masri for the mistake or return him to his home. Instead, he was dropped from a truck on a hillside in Albania. From there, he returned to Germany and contacted a lawyer.

Two years ago, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said after a meeting with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice that U.S. officials "admitted this man had been taken erroneously." In January of this year, German prosecutors issued arrest warrants for 13 CIA agents for their roles in the abduction and abuse of El-Masri.

that's not fukced up??

and the CIA is not god..

100% NO.. its a small price to pay in the grand scheme... gotta crack a few eggs to make an omelet. :yes:

is that irony? :blink: I hope it is..

I really don't think it's fair to stop someone who 'looks like a terrorist' give them a beating (aka interrogation) and drop them in the middle of freakin nowhere, oops, we got the wrong guy?

what should he say then? "ohh, I understand the CIA, they had to abduct me, just to protect the USA, i get it, no bad feelings"?

I don't think abducting an erroneous 'suspect' is a 'small price'..

Well the CIA is not a customer service agency. They truly need to find needles in a large large haystack.

The CIA equivalents of other nations are 100 times worse the the CIA. But unlike the CIA they are never in the media. They don't have liberal movie makers constantly bringing out condescending movies about them and then claiming how dare you call me anti-American..

Tell me how many CIA equivalents of other nations abroad do you know about. Let alone know what they do.

that's not a justification to abduct some dude who looks like a terrorist and give him some hell.. and yea, you're right, probably in other countries, the equivalent of CIA's agencies are worse, but, America is not like those countries, is it? I find apalling that you have a 'don't question any government authority because they're never wrong, or because Somewherestan is way worse', that's really not a justification to treat 'suspects' like sh!t..

Security agencies are not unquestionable, specially working in other countries, they can be scrutinized and criticized..

I think I just might throw up over the total lack of trust of the system here. Two quotes come to mind. "Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety" and " Sell not virtue to purchase wealth, nor Liberty to purchase power." I wish I could run these over to the Supreme Court next door to me here and to all of you sitting there comfortably as nice white Anglo Americans who will never ever be faced with the situation this man was but through. I assure you if you were even within a bit of suspicion you would be up in arms. To you I think this is a little bit of wisdom to think about,

When they came for the communists,

I remained silent;

I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,

I remained silent;

I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,

I did not speak out;

I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,

I remained silent;

I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,

there was no one left to speak out.

I hope that none of you are ever faced with the degredation, fear and horror that this man and those others of us who deal with racial/religous profiling daily deal with, or you would be pissed off too.

Whining about the "rough deal" the CIA receives (though IMO it really doesn't) doesn't at all justify what happened to this man.

Its disgusting - just as disgusting as the innocent man who was shot 7 times in the head by hysterical cops in the London Underground 2 years ago. That family still hasn't received justice for that - and I'm sure their definition of justice doesn't include some wishy-washy moral-relativist bull$hit.

that's what I find disturbing, that people from VJ, are at risk at situations like this, and I mean, the person doesn't even have to BE middle eastern (wasn't this guy from the news german anyway?).. just look like an 'arab' (it looks like for any US security agency 'arab name' or 'arab name that is alike a terrorist name' = terrorist!!!) and bam! u get abducted (yea, that's not arrested for interrogation, that's pure kidnapping)... but some other members (who don't look arab or are not from the middle east) say yea go ahead, it's a small price...

The point of the ruling was this, to let it proceed would expose secrets we really need to keep. This is a good of the country kind of thing. While this guy may deserve justice the act of giving it to him would put the nation in peril. Every nation has it's secrets that it must keep regardless of the unfortunate unintended outcomes.
