Dang, I finally found this thread. I kept looking for it in the Latin American forum

Buck,

I'm glad Paola is doing ok as well as all the others.

My husband is doing pretty good despite the fact that he misses his family and Colombia more than anything. We've gone out a few times and he already knows what highways we need to take to get from one place to another. I taught him how to do the self check out at the grocery store and how to pump gas himself since in Colombia the customer doesn't do that. We also signed him up for English classes at a very good school downtown, they meet twice a week and it's very intense, he's a very smart, determined person, so I'm sure he'll learn quickly. He also has to take the lightrail to get there, so I'll show him how to do that.

Last Sunday we did Race for the Cure here in Denver which I believe is the biggest one in the US and we had a really good time. Then we went to Chillis for lunch and he loooooooooooooooooooooved ranch dressing, couldn't get enough of it, neither can I. :P

Diana

Hmmm what is it about our smart colombian spouses and their love of Ranch dressing??

Maria made me buy some the other day! jajaja

Anyway, things are looking better... she can navigate the Chicago Transit Authority to get where she wants to get... and is fully aware of the horrid service cut and fare increases they want to force down customers' throats... so in essence she is becoming a well-rounded Chicagoan! The only thing is she does not share in the grand-old Chicago tradition of pigging out at restaurants or just going out all the time. We've reaffirmed our like of the home cooking idea and have set aside time pretty much every day to do something different at home. You can say we are trying out a Colombian-Puerto Rican fusion thing...

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

My husband is also into the eat at home thing, he doesn't like the fact that I say "Let's go out to eat" all the time. So we're trying to compromise, we eat at home during the week and then go out to eat on the weekends.

I have been dragged to "El Corral" myself many times. I never understood the attraction. The worst part was they are located in malls, the kind that make peso's dissappear.

I cannot find much close to Colombian food here anywhere, so we have been improvising. Eating at home is good, we have been cooking togeather. I think I may be driving her a little bit nuts. I'm not into rice much, she is.

I don't get the big deal about El Corral either. I had it while in Cali and in Bogotá this last time and the burgers are so bland and dry, they're just not very good. I do like Hamburguesas del Oeste in Medellín even though the beef tastes different, but it's still a good burger for the money.

I'm trying to get my husband into spicy food and it hasn't worked out very well. I loooove spicy food and I would love to go to a Mexican restaurant with him so we can enjoy it. We had Chipotle this weekend and he almost passed out from how "spicy" it was, but it was pretty mild actually. Last night I made home-made salsa and he did enjoy that, but not for too long. Colombians are just not that into spicy food. His mother had him almost convinced that eating spicy food or food with too much pepper caused liver and stomach cancer.

Yeah, El Corral is "OK" by my standards... I am the anti-McDonalds type so you can figure out where I am coming from.

That is also another weird thing... they put ají on empanadas over there and she loves it... but one taste of a real chile over here had her in a nose-bleed!!! Ay pobrecita... anyway, all about the training in my opinion.

Well, gotta go!

after 2 months here my wife has not gotten her SS card. she got her residency card but no SS card even though we checked yes on the DS230 to receive one. we went to our local office and they told us that a request was not made. we filled out the forms and hopefully should get the card in a couple of weeks. other than that things are good. i've been able to find lots of the things my wife likes like postbon manzana, alpina's leche de avena, all of the juices like maracuya, lulo, mango etc. she's beginning to get used to the food here. overall things are good, her english is great and getting better everyday!
