Single people should be paid the same wages in the military as married people. This wouldn't happen then.

Yeah, but then the single guys shouldn't get free room and board!

The married guys get the same free room and board plus extra money for off base housing. so there. :P

huh? We get BAH of like $975... our rent is $975 in base housing. Were we tolive off base an apartment would probably be about $800 plus utilities...

oh wait... I get it... yeah, married guys who don't actually live with their wives can stay in the married barrcks for like $1/day, I think and they still get to pocket that $975/month (or whatever it is inyour area) hmmmm... but - I don't think that this is only restricted to marrying foreigners to scam the system... it would be way easier to marry domestic! We suspect a few marriages as being semi-convenience-based, or at least the wife has moved away, but they're not getting divorced just so they can continue to get BAH.

Your choice to get married. Look I'm not saying you shouldn't be getting paid for housing but the single guys should be paid the same wage as the married for doing the same job.

Wouldn't you agree?

And they are, as far as I know... it's acommon misconception that your paycheque goes up when you get married or have kids in the military. I thought this was discussed pretty well in an above post :)

What planet are you on. I served 6 years in the U.S. Navy. Married people were compensated more than single people. Please.. pull your head out of the sand a little.

Not all sailors are like this, and I am insulted at the implication.

I was a sailor when I married Silvia, I retired with 20 years in, just because there is a few idoits should not mean the rest are bad and should pay for the misgivings of a few

Yes I agree with you.. I am glad you served with honor and retired.

not everyone is bad. just a few are not honest. I think those saliors that did that should be dishonor discharge and serve time cause they are crimials and makes the navy look bad.

The sailor that reported it I feel was brave and did the right thing.

Take care

1. This happened where?? Oh yes in JACKSONVILLE! Gotta love my home town!

2. You DEFINITELY Get more money for being married in ANY military branch. MY ex fiance was in the COast Guard and I didn't know it at the time - but looking back our engagement, I would say, was strongly financially motivated. You really do get a MUCH larger housing thing...

on the news last night in Jax (where this happened) they reported that these particular sailors were getting $35,000 a year more!!!

Finally finished with immigration in 2012!

Whatever, we don't see a penny of our housing allowance and yeah we get about $175 for food - but Dave can't eat at the mess hall anymore. it's a trade off. Other than that his paycheck is exactly the same. Not an extra penny because of me! I dunno if people think that we shouldn't get our housing allowance... but I have no idea how we would live without it - we couldn't afford to pay rent on the $1200/month he brings home!

There should be no allowance. Everyone (within that paygrade) should be paid the same. I think everyones pay should be higher not lower. I bought a house while in the navy and didn't get a cent extra for a housing allowance.

Ok I got offended because someone stated earily that this is a reason that sailor's should not be allowed to marry. I find that a bit offending.

I do however agree that no one in the military should be allowed to be married. Military life is hard and even harder with family. When you consider the divorce rate for carreer people is almost 3 times the national average one has to think if military and families were made for each other.

Another thing is that the $35,000 that these supposedly recieved had to be over several years, or it had to be the amount for all 8 people

The highest paying officer living off base in Mayport makes only 19212 in BAH so there is no way the 35,000 is for one year.

Also if you are single you can collect single BAH if your command approves it or if you are high enough in rank. Most commands allow this as there is not enough barracks to hold all the troops. SOme bases do not even have barracks.

The amount gained from single BAH to married BAH ranges from 252 to 416 dollars a month.

If you took the highest gain that would only be 4992 gain a year. which is why i think the total $35,000 applies to all 8 people and not each, along with it being for more than a year.

Leave it to the media to hype up the bad to make it look worse than it really is.

Single people usually aren't allowed to live off base, either! Well... I only really know about enlisted.. it might be different for higher ranks!

Most bases have a policy that if you have been promoted to E-5 you are able to live off base if you are single. Most are able to reach this level in 2 years. If it a teaching command the permant staff at that command only have to reach E-3 will the students may be required to live on base regardless of rank

Depends on the command and service. I was enlisted too. I believe all officers get BOQ.
