Do women really need to "learn" how to stay home?

other than excluding men, i do not see a problem with it. if a person wants to learn how to be a better person at the house/parenting, then they have this course available to them.

I really don't see anything wrong with this class either except for what Daniel mentioned that it should be open for men and women....

I am sure there are a lot of women and men who might benefit from such a class... I know a few people who would benifet from some cooking classes...

contrary to popular belief not all women are born with the knowledge of cooking and cleaning :P

I'm with the others who are not "outraged" at this class.

It is a private school, and if they have a demand for it.. well than what can anyone really say about it?

I agree that it's an odd "specialization", and quite "out of touch" with most of 21st century culture - but in these circles perhaps there are some who honestly want to pursue this line of study.... I fer sure wouldn't pay the big college $$ for it.. but kudos for those who would like to..

And there are "Women's Studies" degrees are there not? Can men take those classes? Kinda defeats the purpose no?

Oh I should also mention that in Bible college I took a Homiletics Class.. I was the ONLY girl who took that course and actually got the highest grades in the course.. when I won the "preaching" award (preaching by females was not common in this denomination), at the graduation ceremonies that year you should have seen the old biddies squirm!! tee hee.. it was GLORIOUS!

"We are moving against the tide in order to establish family and gender roles as described in God's word for the home and the family," Patterson said at the denomination's annual meeting in June. "If we do not do something to salvage the future of the home, both our denomination and our nation will be destroyed." ...

A description of the homemaking program on the seminary's website says it "endeavors to prepare women to model the characteristics of the godly woman as outlined in Scripture." ...

"It's yet another example of the ridiculous and silly degree to which some Southern Baptists, Southwestern in particular, are trying to return to what they perceive to be biblical gender roles."

Patterson took a leading role in the 1980s in a successful campaign to oust moderates from leadership posts in the Southern Baptist convention. While he was president of the convention from 1998 to 2000, Southern Baptists issued a statement that women should not be pastors and that wives should "graciously submit" to their husbands...

"Women continue to make more inroads into traditional male bastions, which could be provoking Patterson to do this," Key said. Patterson is "trying to draw the line in the sand of where women need to be."

Advocating parenting classes and home skills is one thing. Pigeonholing women, as this class seems to be doing, however, is quite another.

This is a little creepy, to my mind. Send your daughters to our college, give us money, and we'll teach them something that 95% of people master just fine on their own, and meanwhile we won't prepare your daughter for the modern world and tell her that God wants her to be a good housewife. Why don't they just call it the MRS. degree?

I mean, free society, do what you want but I think it's ridiculous to imply that all the women studying engineering or English are violating God's will.

good point Caladan... some women would really think that being a proverbs 31 wife IS the highest calling.. If you take the text very literally (which I think this denomination typically does), then to go to get a degree in this stuff makes sence.

I'm not saying it's right.. or even a good positive message - but I'm just giving some explaination as to WHY they might believe this is so important to offer.

And.. it is said in many Christian College Circles that one goes to (insert college name here) to get their MRS!

I even applied to a college where the student union was said to offer a "refund" of tuition if after your 4 years you were not engaged/married (they could offer this cause almost NO ONE graduated without it)..

true enough.. but i guess that would satisfy some parents who want their daughters to get a degree.. at least it would be put to some use, unlike many other BA's ? (grasping at straws) :)

I want my daughter to have a college experience so she can find a husband. She might as well major in Christian-husband getting? I guess I'd worry mostly because Bible college married-by-your-junior-year marriages don't always have the best track record (friends at Grove City and Orel Roberts), so at 25 or 26, she's newly divorced and has a degree that can.... hmmm. Not that a liberal arts degree is always useful but at least you can spin it into 'good analytical skills' or something.

It annoys me largely because Christianity in general has this beautiful intellectual tradition that I think a Christian girl (or anyone, really) could get a lot out of, and watering it down to 'here's how we rear babies' bugs the living hell out of me. Especially since there are Bible colleges with strong intellectual cred!

That sort of thinking in this country makes me glad that I can think for myself, as too many folk seem to not to be able to think and have to resort to a 4000 year old text to guide them.

Not that there isn't much good in the Bible, just as there's much good in most religious writings. However, the fact that much of it is horribly out of date and no longer relevant really needs to be addressed.

For myself, personally I'm very interested in new cooking techniques as I am a foodie, and I wouldn't mind a formal class in learning how to sew and design clothing as I can't sew a straight line to save my life. And if I ever produced a child, I'd want to be around for the child and teach him/her the important things, the most important being how to think for her/himself.

However, there's no reason to put together a course for a woman to pursue a useless degree to learn these things, when there are so many more interesting useless degrees out there. I mean, if you're interested in having women submit to male authority, barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen, why are you bothering to enroll them in college in the first place? Seems a bit contradictory, don't it?

05-13-06 - Met at Neo Nightclub in Chicago through a mutual friend.

i don't it is so much these folk want their women only to know how to keep a house. I think it is in addition to go through a regular university coursework. I would venture to guess that most males that go through these universities would prefer to marry a lady who can in addition to be able to keep a house, to be able to converse at his level too. A former neighbor of mine was a divorced mother of 2. Dedicated herself to raising her children as best she could and very much in her religion's "way". The lady also went and got a uni degre in english. She was sharper than a tack. She then got married to a law student. Pretty sure her mental abilites were part of the attraction. of course, she was not bad looking either. ;)
