Hi everyone,

I’m currently in the process of helping my spouse immigrate to the U.S., and we recently became documentarily qualified with the National Visa Center (NVC). However, due to extremely long wait times in our original designated country, we’re considering requesting a case transfer to the U.S. Embassy in Thailand.

Has anyone here successfully transferred their immigrant visa case (specifically a spousal visa) to Thailand or another third country? I’m hoping to learn from others who’ve done this. A few questions I have:

  • How long did it take to get a new interview date after the transfer was approved?

  • Are there any helpful tips or things to avoid that you learned during the process?

Thank you all in advance—any advice, experience, or guidance would mean a lot!

A transfer usually adds a little bit of time but not much, so it should be roughly the same as quoted processing times.

The key thing is to submit the request asap and make sure she provides plenty of evidence of her Thai residency with the request so that there isn’t any delay from NVC asking for further info. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/us-visas/immigrate/national-visa-center/immigrant-visas-processing-general-faqs.html#ivp13

She needs a valid reason: either being a Thai citizen or resident.

My gut is she’s neither since you said another third country. If she isn’t, she can’t interview there.

Correct.  Interviews for immigrant visa can only take place in country of citizenship or country of residence.  Doesn't work if just a visitor.
