After all, Illegal Immigrants are the cause of all soceities problems, just like the Jews were back in Nazi Germany.

I agree that it can be used that way (i.e. as an excuse) - but we're talking about the city of Newark. A city with significant social problems, high level of poverty and unemployment and one of the highest crime rates in the country. The law still has yet to get a handle on that (most of the city's violent crime is gang & firearm related) - and people are expecting them to suddenly get on with addressing illegal immigration as well?

Getting rid of sanctuary status is all well and good - but unless there are organizational and logistical changes it amounts to little more than a symbolic gesture.

Can't is a great word. The Mayor needs to get off his a$$ and do his job. It sounds like the citizenery is gettin what they wanted and voted for. If there was an uproar things would change.

Given the current (widespread) gang crime problems in Newark - an 'uproar' about illegal immigration would seem rather trivial by comparison.

Perhaps you could run for mayor, I'm sure a policy of "lets take all resources from fighting gang violence and organized crime and divert to busting illegals" would be highly successful in lowering the overall crime rate in NJ.

After all, Illegal Immigrants are the cause of all soceities problems, just like the Jews were back in Nazi Germany.

well, brother i was almost late to work..

you should have seen those illegals hogging all the lanes..driving slow, just to make us hard working Americans late to work

My point is that gang violence and illegal immigration can be tied together. The latin kings are second only to the bloods in membership.

The three gangs consistently mentioned by local police agencies as their most serious problem were the Bloods, Crips and Latin Kings. Those three gangs also have the largest estimated aggregate membership: Bloods (4,000), Latin Kings (2,345) and Crips (2,100).

The majority of identified street gangs – about 76 percent – are made up of members from the same racial and ethnic backgrounds. (30 percent black, 29 percent hispanic, 15 percent white.

In 2004, the target survey sample was expanded to include each of the 479 full-time police departments in the State. Of those, 439 responded, while 40 departments either did not reply in time, or simply did not respond.

Said Attorney General Harvey, “I applaud the full-time municipal police departments of New Jersey, because their level of responsiveness to the survey was excellent. With relatively few exceptions, local law enforcement has demonstrated a readiness to work with us cooperatively, and candidly, to identify the scope and nature of the gang problem, which is the first step toward effectively combating it.”

This was done in 2004. I wonder how much money they spent doing this survey?

Because if you said it people might take that statement at face value?

In Newark I'd say its arguable - the population over there is predominantly black, as are the gangs.

There are other crime-ridden districts in NJ - Jersey City for one, and south towards Atlantic city. Up around Newark the composition of the population is somewhat different.

Oh, its quite clear. To let ones emotions spin out of control over a debate on a given subject is telling. :girlwerewolf2xn:

I don't live 'in' Newark, but relatively close (as in less than 5 miles). In that respect Newark isn't all that far from New York City (which has a relatively low crime rate these days).

Even if we could establish a substantial link between illegal immigration and gang crime (I honestly don't think we can). Even in your analysis above you are making an assumption that the membership of the Latin Kings is comprised largely of illegals. I'm not sure we can really make that claim without any direct evidence to prove it.

Of course this still leaves the other question unanswered. What can the police and local authorities do to enforce immigration laws (assuming that they have the time, and resources to do it on top of tackling gang crime?). It isn't just reliant on them - the mayor could say "Sure we'll do it", but without inter-agency cooperation it would amount to nothing more than 'good intentions IMO'. Noone is going to promise something they don't have the authority to deliver.

Its obviously not clear, because I basically have no idea what you're on about. Emotions spinning out of control? Huh? Your response to my post seems totally random to me.

A meeting with the NewYork gang unit would be a logical place to start.

I think it comes down to funding more than anything. A big city like NYC has more impetus to clean up its streets than an economically deprived backwater.

I think the outrage is because of the attitude of the Mayor more than anything. He may have bigger fish to fry than illegals but he is acting as if he wouldn't do anything about illegals if he had the chance.

Newark is hardly a backwater, is it? Plus its close proximity to NYC makes it somewhat of a risk

to New Yorkers as well.

P.S. I had the displeasure of driving to the Oranges last night through Newark....and I'm still alive

to tell the tale.
