Overstay Passport Stamp Beneficiary

My fiancé overstayed his visa in another country (South Africa) when we vacationed together by a matter of hours. They prohibited him from visiting South Africa for one year and stamped it in his visa. It has been over a year. 
 

My fiancé is from Mozambique and his US Embassy interview needs to be in South Africa. 
 

My question is, can they deny his visa because of this? Is there anything he can do to prepare for the interview?

That is not grounds for a visa denial.

 

in my opinion, the bigger issue is if SA will let him in with the history of overstay. But I’m not well versed in border control policies of SA, maybe someone else will be able to advise.

I appreciate your response. It puts my mind at ease during this stressful & anxiety inducing process. SA said he is only prohibited for one year & it has been well past that. He has also traveled to another country in Africa without issue.
