"Why, thank you, Dear," he responded, flatteredly. Thinking about how everything is relative, be happy that romance and chivalry are all that are dead in Scotland. In Ecuador (and Peru, and Mexico, and parts of Colombia), many men are "machos," and their wives' lives are a living hell. I met two couple-friends of my fiancee's down there in Ecuador; one husband spent our ENTIRE DINNER soliloquizing on how awful, ugly, worthless, and undesirable his wife was... and she was sitting RIGHT THERE! The other husband applies a complete double standard (the Macho standard) of behavior in his marriage. I really wanted to throttle both guys and tell them how lucky they were to have such sweet, lovely wives, but that's the culture down there. My fiancee says that no Ecuadoriana over age 30 will put up with such behavior, which is a large reason that she and her girlfriends want to marry Norteamericanos.

I kid her by telling her about my housework (aargh, urgh, orgh) on Sundays. I tell her, "After the second load of laundry is put away, I can resume being a Macho."

Ok, well i just got off the USCIS misinformation line with a guy who was very nice at least. He said according to his locater system, my case had transited to an adjucator on approx NOV 28th. he said once they get it they are SUPPOSED to finish with it in 30 days. he said they give them that much time since they will get 100 to 150 cases at a time. He said give it 2 more weeks. it was luck of the draw if your case was on top of the piles or on bottom.

Husband #2 refuses to help at all with housework, and, should his lovely wife dare take a night out with her girlfriends, he lets fly with the accusations: "Where have you been? You've been cheating on me!"

At a party at my fiancee's crib, he got drunker than a skunk, and he had to be carried out by both arms. I had tried very hard to show him that one could perform even one little household task (I grabbed a broom, used it, then exclaimed "I am still a Macho!" but he was too pixilated to notice. My fiancee reports that nothing has changed, damn it.

Even my future in-laws are in that mode. Dad-in-law-to-be insists on a full, freshly cooked meal thrice daily -- leftovers not permitted. For myself, I'd just be happy if someone else opened some cans for me.

You are very sweet, Debz, and you make me glad to be stuck in visa limbo!

My lot in life is to provide bunnies with pancakes on their heads. I fear I might suffer the ox's misfortune were I to shed this yoke, yet wind up where I started in the first place.
