Trump emerges as dealmaker-in-chief in potential US Steel deal

 

President Donald Trump said Friday that Nippon Steel will drop its $14.1 billion bid to acquire U.S. Steel and instead invest heavily in the iconic American company without taking a majority stake.

Nippon Steel "is going to be doing something very exciting about US Steel," Trump said with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba by his side.  "They'll be looking at an investment rather than a purchase.

 

"U.S. Steel is a very important company to us.  It was the greatest company in the world for years, many years ago, 80 years ago.  And we didn't want to see that leave.  And it wouldn't actually leave.  But the concept, psychologically, was not good.  So they've agreed to invest heavily in U.S. Steel as opposed to own it, and that sounds very exciting."  [...]

WEST MIFFLIN, Pennsylvania — Local steelworkers, community leaders, and economic experts said President Donald Trump's announcement Friday that a deal was struck between U.S. Steel and Nippon Steel will go down in American history as the most enduring economic "big, beautiful deal" the 47th president has made.

It is a deal robustly supported by the rank-and-file steelworkers from the three plants that make up the Mon Valley Works.  The deal is believed to reverse the decline of steel that began under President Jimmy Carter in the 1970s.

 

"I am proud to announce that, after much consideration and negotiation, U.S. Steel will REMAIN in America and keep its headquarters in the Great City of Pittsburgh," said Trump, who had been engaged in intense negotiations over a sale between the iconic American company and Nippon Steel.

It's unclear to me what the Japanese outfit gets for all this investment, but the rest of the story remains really heartwarming.  Sounds like a heck of a celebration event.

any large steel products made in japan still have to be shipped to the west coast and then transported to wherever.  this should cut down on lead time and transportation costs (especially for any east coast projects)
