Ok, so now that I am a bona-fide stamped Permenant Resident, do I need to go to the SS Offices and change the card to one without the "Valid for work only with DHS authorisation" message on it, or do I wait until after naturalization to get this changed?

3/29/06 - AOS Approved!

3/3/08 - Check cashed for ROC at CSC...

Feb 2009 - Called USCIS to see what the heck was goin' on...

FEB 20th 2009 - Received email - GC on the way!

I am APPROVED for the 10 year PR Card!

Jay Jay my understanding is that you go with your AOS paperwork and show it at the local office and they will issue you a new card. MDYoung should come or someone else and tell you if I am not correct. Congrats again.

If you have an I-551 stamp or card you can go apply for an unrestricted SSN card. You don't have to do it and I wouldn't kill myself getting in there to apply, but I would get it done in the next couple months. The reason to get it done is that I assume you have or will have a 2 year I-551 card and at some time during the removal of conditions process your I-551 card will be expired and you have a restricted SSN card. With an unrestricted SSN card you have a work authorization document that never expires.

Jul 21.....Fly to JFK-EAD Stamp

Sep 17...MARRIED!

Oct 20....I-94 expires

Oct 22....Mailed AOS/EAD

Oct 24....Receipt date

Nov 2.....AOS/EAD NOA date-rec'd Nov 4 via USPS.

Nov 4.....Checks cashed/Touched (AOS/EAD).

Nov 12...Rec'd AOS bio appt notice.

Nov 23...AOS Biometrics They also did EAD as I had my NOA, Sioux Falls, SD.

Dec 30....Rec'd AOS Interview Notice

AOS 06

Jan 9......EAD approved, email notice to say card ordered

Jan 11....EAD touched/email to say approval notice has been mailed

Jan 14....Rec'd EAD in mail

Mar 30....AOS Interview in St Paul, MN APPROVED!!

Apr 03....Welcome to America Notice rec'd & AOS 'Touched'

Apr 04....Email to say GC ordered

Apr 10....GC arrives in mail

Apr 11....Order new SS card without notation and rec new DL. I live here now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's very easy. The only 'difficult' part was the long wait (SSA office near us is always busy). Got SSN for my son and an unrestricted SS card for me in just 15 minutes.

I did wait for a few weeks after receiving my GC before going to the SSA as I got approved without interview and my online status had not changed. So, I wanted to make sure our gc approvals had enough time to be transmitted to the SAVE (???) system that SSA checks.

(note: sorry, I remember the name of that system that SSA checks)

08/17/08: Mailed N400 to TSC

08/19/08: USPS attempted delivery

08/20/08: TSC received N400

08/21/08: TSC cashed check

09/02/08: Received NOA...........Priority date: 08/20/08

..............................................Notice date : 08/22/08

09/02/08: Received Biometrics Notification

09/18/08: Biometrics completed - Charlotte DO

10/24/08: Received Interview Letter

12/08/08: Interview @ 1:00pm. APPROVED!

01/05/09: Oath Ceremony 10:00AM. Now officially a USC!!!

Well looks like her question had been answered. But i just want to say that as soon as i got my gc i went to get a new one the long wait yeah and they will tell that you will received it in 2 weeks but mine took a week.

####### thanks for bringing this up. I've had my 10 year GC for about 5 months now and totally forgot about my SSN card. Damn, now I have to find a good time to go as I remember the waits. What all should I bring, just my passport with the stamps, my GC, Drivers licence for extra ID? Anything else?

As long as the name on your I-551 card is the same as the name that's currently on your SSN record, that's all you will need, except for the application (SS-5).
