This guy actually made it a point to advise that "tips" are appropriate for the service....Huh? Is this normal protocol?

Yeah, I'm calling BS on this one. This tipping thing has really gotten rediculous too. I will NOT tip Starbucks either!

If I'm going to tip Starbucks, then why not McDonalds? Heck, why not tip the teller at the bank for accurately giving me cash back? It's nonsense. My wife works as a stylist at Fantastic Sams. More frequently than you would think, she will perform a 2 to 3 hour highlight or perm service and the customer will give her a $3 tip- while praising her work and recommending her friends. Bear in mind that at Fantastic Sams she works hourly- not on a 60/40 split.

So, everytime I get a cup of coffee that took the guy behind the counter all of 93 seconds to make, I think of my wife who works a minimum of 20 minutes on someone for a two dollar tip. What goes around comes around!!

What about bartenders?

Depends on how strong they make the drinks. Seriously though tipping the bartender is really self-preservation. I do that to make sure they don't ignore me on the second round. You know how hard it is to get attention at a bar in L.A!

I was bringing them up as an example though...they can pour you a drink or open up a bottle of beer in a matter of seconds, so I don't think tipping should be based on how much time they take. Tipping should be about service...if you like the service then tip...if not then don't tip. :) I couldn't see myself tipping at a place like McDonald's but I've seen tip jars in ice cream shops as well as sandwich shops, where they really can customize the order.

Nicole makes up for my stenginess though. She thinks of it as Karma or something. If she tips the Starbucks dude then she thinks her customers will tip her better. It's funny. In Vietnam she allowed me to tip the waiter at a rate of about 3% (like 25 cents), but here she tips one dollar for 3 dollar cup of coffee.

I like her way of thinking. ;) ...although a dollar tip for a $3 drink is a bit high.

And last night it happened again to her  2 hours on a color job and the woman gave zero tip. Raves about how she loves the work she did and gives no tip. Actually it was her boyfriend that paid so he's the butthead. Starbucks is screwed for sure now.

LOL for the part in red. That really sucks though...I think there's a tactful way to confront somebody when they stiff you out of well deserved tip.

I had to get used to tipping in the first place, since we don't do that in my country. When we do so, it's because of outstanding service.

While I here now, I do tip, but the amount is based on the kind of service we get and not the expected 10-15%.

For take out, like you did, I would never tip and I believe it's even more inappropiate to ask for one.

I believe the base pay is low and they need tips to get by at times, but especially when they ask for one or a higher one....excuse me.....!!!!
