Hi guys,

 

My LPR husband will be eligible to apply for citizenship in February 2022.  We want to apply as soon as possible, as citizenship has always been our final goal.  However, his English is still pretty limited, and I'm starting to wonder about the interview/test.  He has been studying the civics questions and he does pretty well with written English.  He's still pretty limited when it comes to him speaking English though.  I know the N-400 is taking around a year, so we will still have time, but I know it can go quicker depending on local office and our AOS was lightening fast.

 

I guess what I'm wondering is, what have been your experiences with the English-speaking aspect of the interview?  What level of proficiency is required?  I don't want to wait longer than necessary, but I would hate to jump the gun and then have to start all over.  Any experiences, tips, advice are much appreciated. ❤️

They will just ask him simple questions whose answers are like 2 words. I am sure he can manage that. Eg who is the president? So, fret not.

 

And apply online when time comes. Just make sure you apply 1 week after his window opens because USCIS system does not recognize time zones.

Immigration journey is not: fast, for the faint at heart, easy, cheap, for the impatient nor right away. If more than 50% of this applies to you, best get off the bus.

You can check if there are meet ups (see MeetUp.com) for people wanting to do English conversation. You might also want to check for virtual if he is not comfortable going places.

 

He should be ok, but like in any situation, you need to account for nerves, so talking to different people should also help.

This varies a lot by location. A friend got his interview in 5 months from submitting N-400.
