Lost 2-year green card and it's expiring soon

Hi everyone,

Here's the gist of my situation:

I recently had my whole purse stolen from my car and it contained my 2-year conditional green card. I filed a police report immediately. The green card was going to expire in February 2021. I also have a copy (front and back) of my green card.

I would like to leave the US to visit family in the next few months (once i receive my new Canadian passport), but i'm unsure whether I should apply for a new 2-year green card (i-90 form) or simply get a stamp in my passport once it arrives. I've read here that some folks have had success taking that route, but others have said that they will not accept an appointment to put the stamp in if you haven't already filed the i-90.  I know that the replacement green card can take over 6 months to arrive, by which time I will need to apply to remove conditions and get my 10-year green card. I'm afraid that USCIS will reject my application because my card will be expired by the time they issue it.

Any advice on what I should do? Do I apply for the new card (i-90) anyways or can I get away with the stamp in my passport only?

Thank you for your time!

Is your card already expired or is "February 2021" a typo and you actually meant "February 2022"?

My mistake - yes it expires February 2022. I'll back-edit that no avoid further confusion! Thank you!

Ok 'cause I was sitting here thinking, "There's an extra problem if that card is already expired." But since it's not, you're okay. File I-90 (you can do it online and it's faster 'cause you'll get a case number right away) and upload the police report. Sorry to say but I think you'll have to pay the I-90 fee because I-90 is only free if you are filing it due to USCIS/DHS error. However, you need the I-90 receipt notice because it's proof you're following protocol. When you file I-751 in a few months, you can provide the I-90 receipt notice/number if you do not have your new GC at that point in time. I-90's a ####### shoot. I had to file one because they put the wrong dates on there. I got a new GC in 2 months but I somehow just got lucky. Get the stamp in your passport too after you file I-90. You can also provide a photocopy of that with your I-751 papers.

Thank you for your reply! This is what i suspected. I thought maybe there was a work-around, but no the system is working just as inefficiently as it's supposed to be. Maybe I'll get lucky too and get mine super fast (fingers crossed). Thanks again.
