What's a US Citizenship sponsor?

In the case of a LPR who is wanting to naturalize and become a Citizen, there is no sponsor required.

If the LPR is applying after only a 3 year period of continuous residence, based on marriage to a US Citizen, the term for that US Citizen is "spouse", not "sponsor".

If that's the case, they need to submit proof of the USC spouse's US Citizenship, proof that they've been married to each other and living together in valid marital union for the three years prior to filing the application (and at the interview, they'll need to show that the marriage has continued until naturalization). They'll further have the burden of showing that the marriage is bona fide and not for the purposes of circumventing immigration laws.

The exact documentation required to show these things will vary from case to case.

I'm sorry I didn't say it clear :-) This person's applying for a green card and he came to the US as K1 Visa and his spouse is US Citizenship. The Form I-864 required he to submit his spouse's W-2, recent tax return but I wonder does he need to submit a copy of his wife's certificate of citizenship?

by naturalizing your actually "freeing" the sponsor of his/her obligation, no sponsor is required for naturalization.

If the person is applying for a green card, then this question belongs in the adjustment of status forum.

This forum discusses issues around people who have already had green cards for several years, and who are applying to become US Citizens themselves.

But in answer to your question, for an adjustment of status case, if the person signing the I-864 has already submitted proof of citizenship, no additional proof should be needed. Normally, proof of citizenship would have been provided with the I-130 and/or I-129F petitions that had been filed earlier.

But if there's any doubt whether the adjudicator has access to proof of the sponsor's citizenship, there's no harm in sending another copy of proof of citizenship.
