Hi, can someone tell me how collecting social security while also being a Canadian Citizen works??...I am 60 years old and have worked here in the USA for about 6 years but have worked in Canada for 30 years...Can I collect both Canada pension  and social security at the same time??..Thanks for your help..

I don't know what the details might be for your situation, but generally speaking, you need to work and pay into US SS for 40 quarters, 10 years, before you are eligible for a retirement benefit.

I believe you can go to the social security administration's website and plug your info into the calculator to see if or when you might be eligible to collect SSI.

The 10 year qualification does not apply to Canada, if you also have enough qualifying time in Canada. Social Security has treaties with many countries to "totalize" your benefits. I find them hard to understand, but you can find the US/Canada SSA information here. https://www.ssa.gov/international/Agreement_Pamphlets/canada.html

 

It indicates that as long as you have 1.5 years of credit in the US. you may be able to get some money. Almost all the treaties I have seen for other countries vest you for something after 5 years, if you also qualify in the other system, or vice versa. Whether you get 2 checks, or an add-on to the other check seems to vary. You probably want to talk to SSA.
