Which documents can I expect they will keep at the interview?

hi all - just to be sure when I FINALLY get to have an interview.....haha

Which of my original documents will they keep? More specifically, are they keeping the original of my birth certificate or will they take copies and give it back right then ? I ask because I recently went thru a little bit of hell getting a second set of long birth certs for my daughter and me and I can't just go handing them out willy nilly! Thunder Bay was a pain and held onto the order for a few months,..saying there was no reason to ask for a 2nd set - I of course had to exaplin about US immigration needing them possibly, but they weren't too thrilled with that either.

Also - did anyone have nightmares that they would lose your passport while they had it between interview time and getting the VISA in hand? Wiz laughs, but I'm thinking they aren't too trust worthy atm :)

you'll get your b/c back and the other docs.......you'll make copies for them. the only things they keep in their original form is the police check and medical :)

oh and you'll want to write the tracking number from your nvelope so in the event your passport/visa gets misplaced then they can trace it

Udella - I haven't had an interview yet, but I'm probably going to bring photocopies of my birth certificate etc, just in case. I highly doubt that the consulate is going to ask to keep any original personal documents, but good to have the copies in case they want them.

At my fiancee's interview yesterday... They kept the certified translation of her birth certificate. They also took the medical exam (original and sealed), original police certificate, and thats about all the original stuff they took. I tend to think that my case is more unusual because they took a copy of the I-134 without even copies of the supporting documents. Anyway... you should get certified copies of your birth certificate to take with you to even the states. They will be needed along the way.

About loosing the passport.. I was a bit worried about my fiancee leaving her passport for even the few hours that she needed to the following day after the interview because she was in a different country than her own, and thats all shes got for ID. She was to report at the embassy in the morning at 7am and then went back a few hours later to pick up her passport with the visa inside. It seemed to work out just fine. I could imagine the fear of leaving your passport somewhere. I wouldnt worry about it so much in this situation, especially if you want a visa :) Well you seem to want them to put all their trust in you at the time of your interview, maybe you should put some trust into them to grant you a visa to their country. Reason I was worried is that the workers at the embassy where she left her passport were all polish, non-english speaking, non-us citizens. Gotta use your

Every piece of documentation, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, divorce certificates, Court Orders, Police record check, everything, I have 5 copies of them. I have clipped the original documents with the copies so that way they can see the original and take the copies.

Well... I hope that's the way it works out anyways.... Better safer than sorry.

We used little "post-it bookmarks" on each document, and labled them original or copy. When you go to turn them in, she'll ask for each document one at a time (and quickly!) so that helps allot to be able to find them as quickly as she's asking for em =)

But yea, as it was said, bring the original and copy of EVERYTHING. They'll return most of your originals except for i134, police and medical at the begining of your verbal interview.

What about proof of ongoing relationship, even though we already sent it, do they really want more. My fiance is going with me and my son and our newborn son. If our newborn son isn't proof of an ongoing relationship, I don't know what is.......lol.

Wiz, the only original they kept was, like Cutie said, the police certificate.

As to the evidence of ongoing relationship, the only thing I was asked for was the letter of intent, I didn't even open the folder in the interview room, except to put the information papers in that he gave me, which by the way are USELESS. We know so much more from being on here.

I would bring a few things for proof, just in case though. YOU don't need your x-ray either.

Make copies of anything you will take to the interview. They may want to see the originals but if they want the document give them the copy.
