My (US)  spouse (Canadian) have been together for 4 years.  We met in 2016 and began dating in 2017.  We were to get married March 21, 2020.  We obviously had to cancel due to Coronavirus.  We married by proxy in June 2020.  I went to visit him in Canada in July of 2020 to see each other and make the marriage legal by consummating it.  He came to visit me in October of 2020.  I filed the i130 in December 2020.  I received the NOA1 on January 4, 2021.  We have family vacation photos (I have 3 kids from prior marriage) and photos with my family throughout the years.  Do you think the proxy marriage will be a big deal?  We needed to get married to get the ball rolling and I could not visit him (I am a teacher with summers off) unless we were married due to Canada rules about entering Canada as a non-Canadian.  It is obviously too late now to do anything about it but wanted to know if this would be looked at poorly by the USCIS.

In summary, it took 13 months for approval of the CR-1.  It took 44 months for approval of the I-751.  It took 4 months for approval of the N-400.   It took 172 days from N-400 application to Oath Ceremony.   It took 6 weeks for Passport, then 7 additional weeks for return of wife's Naturalization Certificate..

The State of Kansas. I drove to Kansas and we got married there.  He was on Facetime.  We did the required forms and he had them notarized in Canada, mailed them to me, and then I drove to Kansas City.  We got married in Overland Park.  There is nothing on the certificate itself that says by proxy from the state.  I also have him as my life insurance beneficiary and also the beneficiary of my mutual funds.  We used to see each other every other month prior to pandemic but not the past year due to travel restrictions.

I am no expert, but it sounds OK to me since Kansas allows online marriages, and you filed the I-130 after being physically together post marriage.  Good luck.

Thank you!  The virus has made it difficult for everyone to get everything done in the best way to be able to see their partners and get the process moving.  I just didn't want a huge red flag waving around to make it go even more slowly than it already will.  I think our extensive travel histories to visit one another and our long relationship with proof is probably helpful.  I just wanted reassurance!  Thanks for giving me that!
