Hi,

I am helping fill N-400 for my mother. She has basic understanding of English. But, she is not that comfortable in filling 20 page form in English, that too online.

If I check  Part 13 1 Section B on N-400

The interpreter named in Part 14, read to me every question and instruction on this application and
my answer to every question in XXXXXX, a language in which I am fluent, and I understand everything.

Will this hurt her chances of application as we are admitting she is not fluent in English

Harm her chances? Absolutely not. Lying that she didn’t have help with translating the questions would harm your case. Always be honest.

Unless she qualifies for an exemption, she will have to do a reading and writing “test” (it’s only a sentence) at the interview.

Thanks.

May I ask 2 more questions .

1. Regarding Part 10, question 4-8,

My mother is a widow and not married again. Do we answer questions with regards to current spouse.

2. Does the interviewer ask any questions from the N400 in the interview that my mother needs to prepare for, particularly Part 12 (Yes/No answers) ?

Do you recommend to prepare her with filled N400 form.

You do not answer questions 4-8 in part 10

if she is a widow and not currently married. She completes question 9 instead.

At the interview they will go through the form and ask you to confirm your answers and also ask if anything has changed since you submitted the form.

She should prepare for the civics test. Note that applications received after December 1 this year will be subject to the new version of the civics test which is more detailed in terms of US history.
