In the form N-400 it gives an option to change the name and even though I am not changing my name much I just want to rearrange the words in my name.

My name has 3 words (say Alfa, Beta, Charlie) the first 2 words make my given name in arabic language and the 3rd word makes the last name (sur name or father's name).

But In US most of the times they truncate the middle name (Beta) and just use Alfa Charlie or Charlie, Alfa like that. But I want my complete given be highlighted so I want to use a hyphen and make First Name: Alfa-Beta and Last name: Charlie

So my Question is:

1) What are the problems, issues or just events that I might face if i Change my name in US ?

2) What are the problems, issues or just events that I might face if i use hyphen in my first name in US ?

3) Is it ok to do a hyphen in the first name, would it be a joke or does it mean something else ?

Lots of people have hyphenated first names. They don't have any issues except people in speaking tend to drop the second half out of habit but not on official documents. E.g Mary-sue, dayna- joy, Ann-Marie, Sara-Jane etc.

Thanks Thegirl !

Also would there be any problems when I am travelling to my home country with the hyphenated would that cause any issues for them to recognize me from my US passport or documents ?

And would there be any problems from the hyphenated first name with computers, or on legal documents ?

Your name is your name. It's no different hyphenated VS not. It's your name. Remember there are languages that use other characters not the letters you are accustomed to. You're making this a much bigger deal than it is and way over thinking something that is a non issue.

hey, I had the similar problem as you did,  All my documents had 3 names, Lastname Firstname1 Firstname2

When I completed my paper work for visa processing etc, I misunderstood something filled out paper work with names as

lastname, firstname2,

firstname1 became my new middle name, which I never had.

When I did my did my N400 I got it all straightened out with a name change. now my US passport has my names as

Firstname1 Firstname2

Lastname

The only issue I found is that the systems the DMV and State where I live is does not support a space in the name, like

Firstname1"space"firstname2

so they added a hyphen in my first name, now it became firstname1-firstname2,  I always carry passport card as a proof of correct name, all other documents are good. except my DL.

I haven't seen any issues with the hyphen in the DL.

Thanks for your reply MrSayed.

So you are actually going by
First Name:  firstname1<space>Firstname2;
Middle Name: <blank>
Last Name: lastname;

You are not using hyphen in your passport. I already do that I always put my name like in this example
First Name: Abdul Samad

Middle Name: <Blank>
Last Name: Khan

But Most of the places they write like this: Abdul Khan (or) Abdul S Khan

I want to weigh on the hassles/problems (like while booking airline tickets or writing standardized exams like GRE GMAT etc). The problems that I am going to face using a hyphen as in the example: Abdul-Samad Khan
If a hyphen is more problematic then I would have to continue with a space than a hyphen, so I have to make that decision now, rather than later.

So did you or someone you know faced any issues in using the hyphen in the first name or it is all good for them ?

I have travelled after name change, I did not face any issues, in fact I did not have any problem getting OCI also.

Hyphen is something you are thinking of introducing it yourself.  I know quite a few people has 2 first names, specifically names starting with Abdul as in your example.

when any system or officer enters your name as Abdul S Khan, or Abdul Khan, you should tell them you are not Abdul S, or Abdul

You are "Abdul Samad" and you would rather prefer to be called properly, that should solve your problem. introducing hyphen could have other ripple effects like your educations certs and any other documentation that you MAY have to go after.

To answer your question,  No I do not know anyone who uses a hyphen in a legal name. (except me as I said, on my DL only).

Hope this helps.
