You can try, but the people who will be screening the renewal application packets will be working off a checklist.  For the EAD/AP fee to be waived, they would want to see the I-485 receipt notice showing that you paid the required fee on or after July 30, 2007.

That border really screwed me over then I guess. I was heavily pregnant with a toddler and they had kept us there for quite a while, so my daughter was starting to melt down. When he finally let us go I just quickly accepted whatever he handed back to me and didn’t flip through it at the desk. I can’t believe that honestly might have cost me a free renewal.
