Hi Guys

I have applied for a copy of my marriage certificate for my first marriage. I have been married twice. I was wondering if it doesn't arrive in time for my interview is it 100 % neccessary and would the embassy accept other proof of name change?

I have the following: Divorce order showing my maiden name and them married name

Previous passport in previous married name

South AFrican ID Book in previous married name

2nd Marriage certificate stating maiden name and previous married name

Any thoughts?

thanks

I think they need the certificate. Unless they are very understanding, they´ll put you through administrative process and wait until you get the certificate to only later approve or deny your visa.

I´m not 100% sure of this though, I think you should call the consulate and explain your situation.

I think they only need the divorce decree - I dont have my marriage cwertificate - I think when we got divorced the solicitor took it. I only sent in my decree absolute and im still using my married name - until I marry my fiance then I will take his name :)

I have asked this same question a dozen times. The answer I've gotten most often (from UKers) is that its not needed for the petition but its best to have it in the interview.

We'll see if some of our more recent interviewees can come in here and shed more light on this.

I had this same panic, I only found out that they wanted it 2 days before my interview (it was requested in Packet 3, but I totally missed it) I had no hope of getting it because our divorce lawyer took it!! So what I did was call the lawyer and he had a copy of it on his file, so he photocopied it for me and certified that it was a true copy etc. They DID ask me for it at my interview and accepted the photocopy.

They also asked to see it at my AOS interview...so it is advisable to get one.

Hope that helps, and good luck at your interview!

You are talking about the actual marriage certificate?? My solicitor took mine too when we got a divorce - I didnt think they needed it as I have the decree absolute to show that the marriage was over, isnt that all they need? I dont know if my solicitors firm will have all my records from when we got sdivorced and I dont know how quickly they will be able to find it? Is it really asked for at the london embassy at tiem of interview. I mean do they state that in the letter?

As per the Embassy webpage a Marriage Certificate for all previous marriages is required for all applicants. Here is what it says on the London Embassy webpage:

On the day of the formal visa interview all applicants for immigrant, fiancé(e), Kii and V visas, including children and babies, will be required to present the following documents where applicable. All documents, except passports and photographs, must be submitted in single copy, with the original document or certified copy bearing the appropriate seal or stamp of the issuing authority. If only the original of the birth, marriage and/or other certificates is available, the applicant may submit one photocopy thereof but must bring the original(s) with him/her to the interview for inspection by the consular officer.

Here is the site with a list of everything required for the interview:

Can you not order a copy of the certificate? My fiance got married in the Seychelles, and we are able to write and get a copy of it. I would think if you got married in the UK, you'd be able to order one online (much faster than the post).

So if I give David a copy of my birth certificate, he has to bring the original to London for his interview?

Or can I just contact the courthouse in the city in which i was born to get a cert copy?

You can just contact the Dept of Health (at least that's where I got mine) and they will give you a certified copy, this is what would be considered "original" (the real original is locked up in a vault somewhere unaccesible to you). He may not be asked to present it but it is always a good idea to be sure that your fiance has originals of all official documents you sent photocopies of for your original petition :)
