visa application extension

k1 visa application extension. can someone please help. my fiancé's petition has been approved April 2019 and we are at the stage of visa processing at the embassy. but due to unforeseeable events(ie multiple deaths in the family on both sides), we decided to delay processing since we thought that getting married around this time would be inappropriate. I know that they automatically extend the status for up to 1 year so I thought it would be okay. We paid for the interview fee around November 2019 so they would not think that we abandoned the case. my fiancé was supposed to have his interview on april 16 but it got cancelled due to the community quarantine and now our case has expired. can I still ask for extension from the embassy? if so, how do I do that? thank you in advance for your input.
