Social Security Cards vs. Marriage Liscence

In Florida you do not need an SSN or a Florida ID to get married - only a passport (for ID).

We're living down here in Port St. Lucie Florida, last week me and my fiance went to the church to ask the requirements and they have mentioned bunches of it including parental consent ?? (I'm 28 and my fiance's 38) what the heck is that all about?! and so we've decided to go to the city hall for a justice wedding instead and the guy on the counter told us that we need the SS# for the marriage license.

So, I guess we still have a month to wait to get married, I just filed my ss# on june 14 and the lady at ss office said that it usually takes 4 weeks of process before I could get my id. uggh

same goes as ours, we need to get ss#(4 weeks in process) and florida id card as requirements to get a marriage license,,UGHH

Marriage laws are set by state, so I figured the requirements were the same in Palm Beach as Pinellas - he can use his passport. My husband had his driver's license but used his passport instead, and an SSN is not required, they will use the number on the visa.

If someone is telling you you need the SSN and Florida ID card, they're mistaken. If it's at the courthouse, ask to see the procedural manual telling them that. Ask for a supervisor. I assure you it is NOT a requirement.

Did you ask them what the procedure is if one of the people who wish to get married is a non-resident alien who does not have or is not qualified to get receive an SSN is? Most of the time they are simply wishing to get a unique ID # (of which the SSN is the most common)....

Print out the web page I gave you, and ask to see the documentation telling you that what the web site says isn't true, and why do they have on policy online and another in the office? It's a state marriage law - they don't know what they're talking about.

They do NOT need your SSN. How else would my husband and I have gotten married?

Go to another courthouse, another county if you have to.

I know now that you should wait about 2-3 weeks after arrival before you go and apply for your ssn. But in Ohio you need a ssn to get married. so does that mean that at min I have to wait at least a month or so before we can get married? oh dear lawrd all this waiting time! lol.

No you don't... I got married (in Ohio) before I had my SSN. What county are you in? We live in Hamilton County & applied for the marriage license online - it did seem as though I'd need an SSN to complete the form, but I called to ask about it, and was told just to enter zeros on the form. We got our marriage license without any difficulties and got married about a week later - I didn't get my SSN until after we were married (although I applied for it beforehand, so had to go back to the SSA to change my name as soon as the card arrived in the mail).

Thank you to all who suggested I call them! lol. Ok I called the Lake county probate court to ask questions lol. They transfered me to a really nice lady in that area. She said if you have your K-1 visa you don't need to have a ssn # when you go and apply for the marriage liscence, she then gave examples of students from Russia who come here and want to get married lol. She also reminded me that I need to bring my certified copy of my divorce decree (they will look at it but won't keep it) and pay $44 in cash lol. The liscence is good for 60 days.

Ok I feel satisfied now to a point. But should I ask for that in writing for peace of mind sake? lol. What If I planned a lavish wedding two weeks after his arrival and something goes wrong? lol.

You do not need a SSN in the state of florida. The passport or drivers license is all you need. That is a fact. Just go and apply for the license.

WHAT IS NEEDED TO GET A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

Both parties must provide proof of the following:

Age: both parties must be at least 18 years of age

Identification: in the form of a driver’s license, state ID or passport

U.S. citizens must provide their Social Security Number. Non-citizens may provide a Social Security Number or an Alien Registration Number issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

An application form must be completed. If either party has been previously married, you must note on the application how and when the marriage ended.

> The fee for the marriage license is $93.50. This fee is reduced to $61.00 and the three (3) day waiting period is waived for Florida residents who have completed a premarital preparation course and can provide completion certificates from a registered provider.
