Can I use Permit of reentry passport to go to Europe?

Hi all, 

I have a  U.S permit of reentry, someone told me I could use it as a passport to go to other countries. I have a to make a trip to spain in a couple of months. Normally I'd have to apply for a schengen  Visa. I was wondering if I could use the permit of reentry as a passport to go there.

In the past I read somewhere that this permit of reentry can be used as a passport in other countries. Hence the question. You're right I'll check with the Spain embassy. Still any other people with different replies will be helpfull :)
