Hi,

My interview for the citizenship application just got scheduled, and of course they picked a day that I will be out of town for work training. The training is already paid for by my employer, with hotels booked and everything, so it will be a big hassle to get everything cancelled, and it will probably cost the company some money. I see that I can write a letter to the local USCIS office and request a new interview date. Has anyone had to do this? How long did it delay your interview and the overall process?

Thanks!

My friend did that but with the oath ceremony. She successfully went through her N400 interview, was approved, then left for a 2 month vacation to Russia, her home country (it was pre-planned with non-refundable tickets). The invitation for the oath ceremony arrived when she was out of the country. She wrote a letter to USCIS to request to reschedule the ceremony. That was in early August. Since then she returned to the States, and is still waiting for a new date to arrive in the mail.

Yes, I just did that for my brother-in-law. He actually missed the interview. He never got the appointment letter.

We just called USCIS 1800 number. Spoke to a tier 1. They put in a ticket and give you a reference number. I think it has to go back to the field office that schedules the interview. Then they send out a new date.

Original interview was supposed to be August 15th. Got a letter the following week saying you missed your interview, if you don't do anything within 30 days we will close the application. Called USCIS immediately as above. Got another interview letter last week. New interview is now Oct 15th. Field Office is Des Moines, Iowa.

Just wanted to give an update here in case it’s useful to others. I ended up sending a letter to the field office, and requested them to reschedule. They received the letter on September 30, and cancelled my interview on October 2. They sent a new date and time today (October 10) and my new interview date is November 21. So overall, the interview got pushed about 3 weeks (October 30 to November 21), so not bad! :)

That's great news, congs!

However we weren't so lucky with our rescheduling :(  My husband and I had to send reschedule requests due to conflicts with our international trips. The original interview date was September 17th, we Called USCIS contact center right away when we got the letter (August 15th) and sent the explanation letters to local office as requested (delivery confirmation received on August 21). We have got nothing so far other than a letter saying I missed the interview...

It has been almost 2 months since we sent the reschedule request, we have Called USCIS contact center twice and they are not helpful at all, they just said the reschedule timeline is very vague. USCIS changed their infopass process this year, we had to go through contact center to set up appointments, they refused to do that for us as well.

SO we are stuck.. and had no idea where we are with this process at all...

@Hutong Hi there,

Hope you get your card already!

I am in the same boat with you right now. I requested to reschedule my 485  interview by calling and mailing. I only got one letter saying writing to the office for a request. 20 days so far, no updates at all!! And my trip is in two weeks....😔Can you please share your experience? After sending the letetr , did you receive any emails or mails? Did the status online ever change? As you know, the Infopass is not allowed for this situation anymore and the rep refused to help me to follow up with the local officer😡.  If I am not getting any confirmations from the local office, I am scared to leave the country. Really appreciate it!

Hi,

We have finally sworn in January. It has been quite bumpy for the last couple of months.

My husband got a cancellation letter and new appointment after we called in again and talked to a level 2 officer in Nov. ; I didn’t get mine until I called in Dec. and talked to another level 2 officer, he checked in the system and told me they were waiting for my response...   I was asked to submit another explanation letter with a copy of everything I’ve submitted before on their website. After that, everything went smoothly.

To answer your specific questions, they did send email confirmations to me after I called Uscis contact center before my trip and the first time I talked to a level 2 officer in Nov.; online status only change when they send out official Uscis notices, such as interview schedules, cancellations, etc.

Mind you that I was applying for citizenship, it looks like you are in your 485 process. I’m not sure how different these two processes can be since things have been changed quite a bit from back when we applied for green cards.   My suggestion is if you can cancel or change your trip, do it, there’re so many things can go wrong; if you can’t, make sure you keep copies of everything you’ve submitted including referral ID ( or whatever no. they gave you when you made calls), so you can follow up when you come back.

Good luck!

@HutongHi,

Very appreciate your reply and all the details-really helpful! You mentioned you got confirmation emails after first and second call in Nov,  is it a cancellation confirmation email ? If you do, how did it go wrong??? I never got any emails besides one letter (it took 10 days to get it !!!!!). And the first two reps said my case should be ok. 🙄🙄 I also asked to speak to a tier 2 officer, but the rep said the tier 2 officers do not have further information, which seems not true. I will try to call tier 2 officer and wait one week more. I cannot get Infopass and this office does not accept walk-ins , I have no idea how to withdraw the request at this moment. 😫Thanks for the notice. I will go to the interview If I do not get a granted confirmation!

We were supposed to send mails to USCIS that include an explanation letter and proof in addition to calling them. I never got cancellation or deschedule notices. The emails I’ve received were just to confirm that they got my initial request for rescheduling, according to the second level 2 officer, they were still waiting for my follow up, which has been received and signed by their office in August (per my USPS tracking). I don’t know how my mails got lost and why it has to take so many calls to find it out.

@Hutong This is exactly what I think is happening to my case. Cuz usually ppl gets notices about receiving letters and cancellations. I just called them again, and the rep told me I would be fine leaving the country the office is not gonna deny the request.....I cannot believe that! Did you leave the country after the request? I heard once the case gets denied, the travel document becomes invalid imminently , so cannot reenter the states.

Hi! Yes, I became a citizen back in December!

I didn't receive any emails I believe - I got all of the updates I mentioned in that post from the online myUSCIS account. I was logging in multiple times a day checking for an update! :) I didn't send the letter to a specific department, I just put the field office address as the recipient, and sent it with tracking and signature request too to make sure they received it.

We still left as planned as we thought it’s common to receive a reschedule notice after we came back, since most people did successfully get their interviews rescheduled as reported.

However, as I mentioned earlier, we are in n400 process, even if something went wrong in our case, we would still be able to come back as we already got our green cards. Your case might have more at stake   here.
