Welcome to the forum.

Sorry, you are listening to an old wife's tale, or some other extenuating circumstance.

The key is quite similar as when doing any international travel with your old name in your passport. Book the ticket in the passport name, your GC (or Advance Parole document) will be in your new name, and your marriage certificate will be the document that shows the change.

You should apply for your I-485/I-765/I-131 (AOS/EAD/AP) with your new name (unless you want to keep using your old name). Until you get more documents (i.e., GC, Driver's license, State ID card, passport) in your new name, a copy of your marriage certificate will document your name change.

This type of documentation concern is often discussed at the Working & Traveling During US Immigration Forum.

HTH.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

This is an old post but I know you are still active so hopefully it's ok!:

We are doing CR-1 DCF via London, and just received packet 3. Although using the new married name in the application, the name in NOA2 and packet 3 shows her maiden name.
Possibly because my wife's passport still has her maiden name. We are not able to get the name changed in her passport.
Or, maybe it is simply an error by the US Immigration/Visa people, and they should have used the new married name. I'm not sure. But mistakes do happen.

We want her to start life in the US using my last name, her new married name.

But because her passport shows her old last name, is this a problem?
Will the final visa in passport needed to enter the US be in the new last name? Or does it have to match the passport name?
Is that name in the visa the one she uses for life in the US? Or is the name she starts life in the US with, the name from the green card? - and can the green card be a different name to the passport/visa?

My hope is that we do not need to apply to 'change her name'  once we enter the US, I read that costs a few hundred $$$!
I read this post and start to worry - https://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/576872-passport-in-maiden-name/?do=findComment&comment=7911833
Sorry if my post is not clear, I'm very happy to clarify and reword anything if needed.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
