Oo, interesting read, Steven. So if dialects are mutually intelligible, then why aren't Swedish and Norwegian just dialects of the same language? Maybe to linguists they are but to nationalists they're not?

Just thinking aloud...

Good question. Aren't the Latin based languages in essence, 'dialects'?

No, because they aren't mutually intelligible. A French speaker can't have a comfortable conversation with a Spanish speaker without any prior knowledge of Spanish. A Portuguese speaker can maybe understand a Spanish speaker, but it doesn't work the other way so I dunno.

Hm, Spanish speakers in Argentina didn't understand the Portuguese speakers with us, but that is really my only experience with it. And I'm sure on paper any Spanish speaker could understand Portuguese just fine. So then yeah, I'd say those two might be dialects by that article's definition. Especially because of their history of sometimes being one language. But not all Latin languages could be called dialects.

well technically they ain't called latin.. they are romance... and, although yea a spanish speaker can understand some portuguese, neither is a dialect.. although probably portugal people think brazilian portuguese is a dialect.. but nah, a dialect would be either catalan or 'gallego' from the NW part of spain..
