John Edwards: The Global War on Terror is not an actual war

The war on terror is a slogan designed only for politics, not a strategy to make America safe. It's a bumper sticker, not a plan. It has damaged our alliances and weakened our standing in the world. As a political "frame," it's been used to justify everything from the Iraq War to Guantanamo to illegal spying on the American people. It's even been used by this White House as a partisan weapon to bludgeon their political opponents. Whether by manipulating threat levels leading up to elections, or by deeming opponents "weak on terror," they have shown no hesitation whatsoever about using fear to divide.

But the worst thing about this slogan is that it hasn't worked. The so-called "war" has created even more terrorism—as we have seen so tragically in Iraq. The State Department itself recently released a study showing that worldwide terrorism has increased 25% in 2006, including a 40% surge in civilian fatalities.

By framing this as a "war," we have walked right into the trap that terrorists have set—that we are engaged in some kind of clash of civilizations and a war against Islam.

The "war" metaphor has also failed because it exaggerates the role of only one instrument of American power—the military. This has occurred in part because the military is so effective at what it does. Yet if you think all you have is a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail.

Well he's a bit late to the party -

I believe he's the only Presidential candidate (excluding those with no chance of winning like Kucinich and Gravel) who has come out and said it in these terms.

Maybe - but like most politicians he's light-years behind the general public.

I'm wondering about his judgement after he paid $400 for a haircut that looks like he just got out of bed.

LOL... I really liked him in '04 and voted for him in the primary. I hope he goes further this time around.

But you're right, $400 for a haircut is just ridiculous for anybody.

He should have just gone to Supercuts, y'know, to show he's a man of the people. I got my hair cut there all throughout my childhood and I thought I looked pretty HAWT.

Apparently, John Edwards took a lucrative job at a hedge fund to learn more about poverty. Yeah, right ;)

Democrat John Edwards said Tuesday that he worked for a hedge fund between presidential campaigns to learn about financial markets and their relationship to poverty and to make money too.

In an interview with The Associated Press, the former North Carolina senator said his yearlong, part-time position with Fortress Investment Group helped his understanding of the connection but he has more to learn. Edwards has made eradicating poverty a focus of his second White House bid.

[...]

Asked if he had to join a hedge fund to learn about financial markets, Edwards replied, "How else would I have done it?"

He said he considered going to an investment firm such as Goldman Sachs, but Fortress was the most natural fit. Presented with the suggestion that he could have taken a university class instead, he said, "That's true."

[...]

Hedge funds, now numbering more than 9,000 in the U.S. with assets estimated to exceed $1 trillion, traditionally cater to the rich, as well as pension funds and university endowments...

Amerika's War of Terror has been around for some 50 years. Anyone with a knowledge of history, U.S. Interventions, and Amerika's sponsorship of terrorism knows this.

A bit late? Amerikans are patently stupid.
