No, we've just had it longer and it's not such a novelty. Whenever you have a faith dominated by newbies, so to speak, you have a lot of converts with western perspectives shaping the faith into what they were looking for when they came to it, not what it was when we were born into it.

If the newbies are married to foreign born spouses they tend to take on their spouses view on Islam and issues regarding Islam. I reverted nearly 14 yrs ago (in 1994), I was much more "militant" and religious back then. The novelty for me has certainly worn off.

One thing I've noticed on VJ is lots of people who have a need to project onto a faith what makes them comfortable and personalizes it for them alone. It unhinges lots of folks to think that a religion has rules and limits that apply to them and that are not of their making. They seem to see rules and limitations in religious doctrine as oppressive and demeaning, and resist the idea that it is the will of God that is to be followed, not their own.

I've noticed that about you, Kara. I recently met a new convert to Islam and he is still in the "seeking identity" phase, marching around in Arab clothing, sprinkling every sentence with Arabic terms, refusing to speak to unrelated women, the works. It's strange to watch, and I'm Muslim!

Religion is not something you're born with, you can't be "born" Muslim or Christian or vegetarian.
