Do I need A number to submit case inquiry?

On the Uscis website My date has come to open a case inquiry because of outside normal processing times for my EAD. I am out of town for a week and the documents with my A number are back at my house. Can i still submit an inquiry without my A number or Call USCIS and ask them about the status with out it? Or do i absolutely need My A number to do anything . Would having my case number be sufficient ?
