I am one of the unlucky people who got a courtesy letter and was asked to send it back to USCIS and their Incident Response Program. I will be traveling to Sweden on December 21 and return to the US on January 6. 12-month extension is still good so I'll travel on that obviously. Do I also need to get a stamp just to be on the safe side or am I all set to go?

No need for a stamp if the letter is still valid upon your return.  My wife traveled several times on her extension letter and expired GC with no issues.  One suggestion, make a few copies and keep them with you, once my wife was checking-in in Beijing and the airlines asked to have a copy, luckily she had a few to give them so she did not have to give up the original.  One other comment, with the extension letter, you will not be able to use the kiosks at CBP, head straight to the immigrant line.

Good to know, I will definitely bring a few copies with me :) I will try to bypass the kiosks. They're pretty good at herding people at Dulles and won't really care if you can go through the kiosk or not. They still want you to go through everything and get that pretty cross on the piece of paper :P Thank you!
