so if many people interpret whether its necessary to wear one or not, whats wrong with interpreting how a hijab is worn? or interpreting their own meaning of "modesty".

For me the problem comes when people profess their actions are Islamic and yet they have very little knowledge of Islamic scholarship. Just because one's SO is muslim and their family says something is Islamic is enough for too many people. There has been a breakdown in Islamic knowledge in the Muslim world. Culture, lack of knowledge of history, political power grabs has polluted the practice of Islam. I don't think it is coincidental that the first word revealed in the Quran was "read."

How can individuals interpret modesty or how to practice hijab when they fail to tackle scholarship and rely only on others to interpret?

Sharon, I thought you were Jewish, but your emphasis on Christianity in your post re the variety of faith expression made me think perhaps you were part of that experience instead and that I was mistaken about what faith you are. I have been informed that I was not mistaken in my initial impression, after all. I apologize for mischaracterizing you as a Christian.

I make a lousy Christian because I'm not one. I know as much about Christianity as I do about Islam.

You are right about one thing for a change, Islam is nothing like Christianity or Judaism because I cannot think of any Christian or Jewish suicide bombers.
