Tourist visas for family members

Hello all,

As you can see from my timeline, I am currently filing a K-3 visa for my wife. We are soon having a baby, and she and the baby will move to the U.S. (unless the visa is granted in time).

For this reason, my parents-in-law would like to come visit towards the end of the year, with no intent to stay at all. They have held working visas (P-visa) twice in the past but have never really traveled (their performances were canceled). On the other hand, my sister-in-law is currently in the U.S. under a tourist visa, although she entered with a P-visa as well (she changed her visa to a tourist one while she was here, although I'm not sure how that was done). Her visa expires some time in July.

Cutting to the chase, my wife and I are worried that her sister's actions may affect their parents' ability to be granted a tourist visa later on, and if granted, be denied entry at the POE. I'm not so worried it will affect the K-3 visa process, as my wife didn't has never outstayed her P-visa, nor did we get married for AOS while she was here.

My questions are:

1) Is it even possible to change from a P-visa to a tourist visa while in the U.S.? I get the feeling her sister may be lying to us and she might even be out of status, but I am no one to judge.

2) Suppose the sister overstays her current visa, would the consulate in Colombia or CBP be aware of this and use it against my in-laws applying/entering for/with a tourist visa?

I know this is a weird situation, and borderline inappropriate, but I would greatly appreciate any opinions. My wife, in-laws, and I are very disappointed.

It is possible to change from a work visa to a tourist visa.

If hers expires in July, she would have done it at the beginning of the year.

She will have a new I-94, the only way to be certain is to have a look.

Her Parents will need to advise details of her on the B application, so you have a good reason for finding out her true status.

Having family here illegally whilst not a complete bar would certainly not help the situation.

Boiler, thanks for your reply.

I talked to my wife yesterday about this again, and she doesn't think her sister would lie like that. She did get it changed around January, when her other visa was about to expire. If it's indeed possible, then I believe we're fine for now. Hopefully she doesn't overstay her current visa.
