I don't know if I'm in the right place to ask this, so if I'm not, please let me know.

We recently filed my husband's I-751. They received it at the California Service center through FedEx last Friday. My questions are this:

1.  Should I be concerned that they haven't cashed the check yet ?

2. How does this process even work exactly ?  I know in 3-5 weeks, (so I've read) he'll get a piece of paper saying they have received our package and there will be a case # assigned and this piece of paper will extend his green card for 1 year.

When/how does he get a biometrics appointment ? Do we need to make it after we get that piece of paper or do they make it for us ? Does he have to bring his passport ? (His Moroccan passport expired in November 2017) - if so, we'll need to expedite getting it renewed.

Someone else who had gone through this process, but it was several years ago, said he just brought his driver's license and social security card.

Again, if I'm not supposed to ask this here, I apologize.

TIA

If they received it last Friday then it's fine. Sometimes it takes more days to cash the check. Last year I did my N400 and it took them almost 2 weeks to cash the check. Give them a couple more days.

1.  Should I be concerned that they haven't cashed the check yet ? No, it takes time. Usually 1-2 weeks.

2. How does this process even work exactly ?  I know in 3-5 weeks, (so I've read) he'll get a piece of paper saying they have received our package and there will be a case # assigned and this piece of paper will extend his green card for 1 year. It will extend his status by 18 months, this is a recent change. 2 weeks - 1 month later you will get the biometric appointment notice. Sometimes more given current delays. He will then wait forever. Most likely, his letter won't cover him until his case is processed. Within 30 days, he will schedule and InfoPass appointment to get an I551 stamp in his passport. His status won't expire, but he would need this to leave/enter the country/proof of work. Some have auto-approvals, most will have an interview that you both must attend.

When/how does he get a biometrics appointment ? Do we need to make it after we get that piece of paper or do they make it for us ? They will send him a piece of paper notifying him of his appointment at an assigned date/time. Does he have to bring his passport ? No, but he needs photo ID, such as green card, drivers license, etc. (His Moroccan passport expired in November 2017) - if so, we'll need to expedite getting it renewed.

So if he has to get another I-551 stamp, will it need to be in a valid passport ? I'm just worried that we won't have time to apply to have his passport renewed and get it back in time for the biometrics appointment.

He would need an I-551 stamp in about 18 months. That should be enough time to get it. He doesn't need the passport for biometrics.

At the time of an I-551 stamp if he doesn't have a passport, he can get a special card made as proof of I551 but he'll need to bring two passport photos.

Thank you so much for your help. You’ve put our minds at ease. 😊

Well, here we are nearly a month after the California Service Center received our package and they still haven’t cashed the check or sent out a receipt. We called USCIS and they said we had to give them 30 days so that’s what we are going to do. We will be calling on Tuesday 9-11 to see what they can tell us, if anything. My husbands green card expires on 9-21 and we don’t know what to do without the NOA 😕
