applying for citizenship as widow

Hello, I was widowed less than 3 years ago and is now considering applying for citizenship. However, I was wondering if there's any other step i should have taken as far as being widowed while on permanent resident status?

A person is ineligible for naturalization as the spouse of a United States citizen under Section 319(a) of the Act if, before or after the filing of the application, the marital union ceases to exist due to death or divorce, or the citizen spouse has expatriated.

 

So it depends on how long you have been a green card holder about when you can apply.  You probably have to wait 5 years. But uou can no longer apply as a spouse.

You just need to apply based on the 5 year residency rule. Much better if you are able to file online. You do not need to submit it right away, just start it - as you answer the questions you will be advised as to what additional info you need to supply. At the end of it you will be shown a page where you can upload your supporting documents. Just sign into the account every so often to keep it "alive," otherwise they will erase the application if it has been idle for 30 days. Be prepared to upload a copy of your spouse's death certificate.
