Question about the I-864

My question is about the affidavit of support. I understand that the petitioner or co-sponsors, etc must show that they earn 125% above the national poverty scale based on household. My doubt is about the tax documents and the role they play in this. I only reside and worked in the US for a small part of last year. Will the affidavit be based solely off of my tax documents declaring how much I made last year? Or would it suffice to have current employment which meets the requirements. Would my current employment be enough? Or would they go off of my tax documents?

It’s 125% of the federal poverty level,  or above it.

 

What they care about is current income, not past income. That said, they need evidence of that current income, and tax returns can be one consideration of that. You still need to provide the most recent year’s income tax return AND have filed taxes for the last 3 years (or provide a reason why you were not required to file, such as having no worldwide income), but an employment letter and current pay stubs are usually sufficient to show that current income levels.
