Hello, my fiancée arrived in the USA from Vietnam and we got married on the K-1 visa.

She has a name example: Ngo Tha Phan:  where Ngo is her first name, Tha is her middle name and Phan is her last name.

On all the paperwork I have entered it like this. But when she arrived in the US I noticed they put her name as Tha Ngo Phan so they switched her first and middle names on the VISA stamp in her passport.

When we got married they told us we should put the name to match what it was on the VISA so we got the marriage licence has her name as Tha Ngo Phan. I am starting to work on her i-485 form and I am entering her info again as Ngo Tha Phan so I am not sure if this is going to be a problem.

What I am thinking about doing is changing the marriage certificate to have my last name. so her name would change to:  Ngo Smith and then file the I-485 paperwork. Does anyone recommend doing it this way. I am not sure what problems will arise down the road with her middle and first name being incorrect on the k-1 visa.

But i have also heard that if your green card has your new name ( Ngo Smith) and your passport has your old name (Tha Ngo Phan) then she would not be allowed to travel back from Vietnam if she went to visit before she got a US Passport with a new name. Does anyone know if this is a problem to travel if you name on the passport and green card is different.

thanks

travel was never a problem for me when the green card name and passport name were different.  We simply carried the document (marriage certificate) that showed the name changing from A to B.  All travel tickets are however booked in the passport name

YMMV
