Customs at POE

Hi, this question is for everyone who has already entered the US on a K1 visa.

When entering the US, on the customs form what did you put for the part where it says about things staying in the US?

I ask because everything we’re bringing will be staying in the US now that we’re emigrating but I wondered how customs look at it and if you declared everything?

Also, has anyone entered with large sums of money on them? How did that go?

Thanks in advance.

Emily

I was instructed by CBP to write "household goods" on the form with no item list or value. One form per family. If you have duty free items or new purchases like gifts, you are supposed to list and value those as on any trip.

If you have over $10,000 cash on you, there is a separate form to fill out. Otherwise you don't list money. There is no issue with what amount you bring. It is only a required report. I would not travel with a bunch of cash. Not safe.

A crowded airport is not the place to carry a lot of cash. Nor is an aircraft - what if you fall asleep during the flight? Leave it in a bank in the U.K. and transfer it once you have an account here.

I didn't come on a K-1 but I did come on an IR-1 and was told to write "used personal belongings" on the form with no value because things you have owned for more than 2 years and are being brought here for your personal use are exempt. If you're bringing gifts for people here you have to declare them and their value.

The blue form was snatched out of my hands by the customs man without even a glance at it.

1. I put personal belongings on my form, and that included my Gaming PC! I had no problems at customs

2. I would not recommend carrying a large amount of cash.
