jasman,

If that were the case the shop would have offered to fix the problem, not send her elsewhere.

Yodrak

I would get a second opinion from a Ford dealer. It suspiciously sounds like the old muffler bearing problem

Yodrak,

I may know nuffin 'bout cars, but I'm still a he.

Cheers ;)

And thanks for the advice. Second opinion it is.

SteveLaura,

Didn't see any indication of sex in any of your posts in this thread. I usually use a non-commital 'they' in such case, don't know why I didn't in this case - fingers were going faster than the brain, I guess. But, point taken and I apologize for my confusion.

:D 'Tis fine. I am secure enough in my sexuality not to worry about my lack of automotive knowledge... -_-

Cheers again for the advice.

Second opinion!!!!!

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

If you aren't burning oil (blue smoke, bad smell), and with 50k miles, I highly doubt it is a seal / piston ring. On new cars these usually last forever anyway. Vacuum hose or oxygen sensor, or fuel filter sounds more likely. Get a second opinion, ideally from a Ford dealer. If you can find out the diagnostic codes it is throwing, it would be a big help. The OBD-II codes and Check Engine lights on American cars are almost always for emissions only. The dealer's computer is usually better. They will usually tell you what is wrong for free. Dealer's repair prices are negotiable, don't be afraid to bargain (or call another dealer).

I've seen a bunch of bad fuel filters in the last year. The ethanol they started putting in gas is corrosive to steel, knocks all kinds of gunk into the fuel system, causes problems like this all the time.

Changing oil, oxygen sensors and filters on time is about the only thing you need to do for newer cars. Go with good synthetic oil, even if you forget to change it, the engine will be fine for at least 15,000 miles.

So, do I try to find someplace that will take my engine apart and fix this seal (which I'm learning seems to be a tricky procedure and may be equally costly), get the engine replaced or get a 2nd opinion? I'm reluctant to pay $1500 if the first place has misdiagnosed this engine light, now the 2nd garage has put a doubt in my mind.

If you need more info, please ask simple questions; I know little about cars. 4 wheels, steering wheel, runs on petrol. That's about it.

Cheers.

i think $1500 to replace the engine is low, should something really be wrong with the engine........something stinks with that assessment of theirs.

good catch. run from these two crooks. who 'just replaces engines' anyways? Go to someone not recommended by them. Contact AAA for a recommended shop.
