Hi all!  I am driving myself crazy trying to get answers to this and the local DMVs are no help at all.  My (now) husband came over on a K-1.  We got married on August 4th and filed for AOS on the 15th.  Once we get the hard copy of the NOA1 in the mail we want to go and obtain his South Carolina driver's license.  I can not get a direct answer on the process for this with a UK license to a SC license.  Does anyone know if he will be able to take the written test and road test on the same day or if he will have to obtain a permit for 6 month first?

He has a valid UK (England) license that does not expire for years and all of the required paperwork he needs (pending the NOA1).  He also possesses an international driver's license from the UK that he obtained for previous trips (even though it is not required in SC).

Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!!  Thanks in advance!!

I can't say for SC, but for VA I took the theory and driving test on the same day.  I can't remember if they even looked at my UK license as it wasn't transferable.  I took my passport, NOA and UK driving license with me to the DMV.

Thank you for this.  I am hoping that will be the case with South Carolina as well. I had one agent tell me that he will have to have a permit for 6 months (where he can only drive with a licensed driver in the car) before his license and another tell me he can do both tests on the same day and a third tell me she has no idea.  So I am right back to square one with my questions. Haha.  I do know that UK is not transferable to South Carolina either but I don't see why he wouldn't be able to go straight to a license considering you can legally drive on a UK license while here. I appreciate you sharing your experience!

He needs to get his SC licence figured out soon. His UK licence is no longer a valid licence in your state due to how long he has been a resident for.

We are trying to get it done but we cant go for his license until we get the NOA1 from filing for AOS.  Do you know how long his UK license is valid here?  He has only been in the states for 2 months.  Thanks!
