Never been asked for any number before. And isn't the card production number the number on the back saying how many been made since whenever time? This number is not it. I'm sure it doesn't matter. Probably just for the airline anyway.

Anyone flying into the US has to provide APIS information, and if you are a US LPR this includes your A number. This is for homeland security, not the airline, but it is collected by the airline. If you don't provide it online before you fly, the check-in agent records it.
