Was out of USA for long chunk of time, do I explain why in packet?

My husband and I traveled to Italy for vacation and visiting family last August. Prior to going he received a semi-scary medical diagnosis and he decided to get a second opinion and then treatment in Italy. He ended up staying there for 5 months, but I returned after only two weeks  because my children were still in USA and my new job was starting. Although he had no problems re-entering the US, I am worried about getting an RFE when they see the long time between re-entry.

Anyone else have long times outside the US and did you explain why in your packet? I don't know which is better or worse to do....

Thank you!

As long as the stay wasn't over 6 months he's fine.  If it does get questioned during your interview, you can produce medical letters and hospital records.
