I'd have to say that the worst thing you could do to a person new to the United States is to teach him how to speak English with a British accent . . . hard enough trying to figure out US (meaning the "natives" . . . not to offend any of the real native Americans) and the funny way we pronounce things. Not that I pronounce anything funny . . . I only LIVE in Texas and I don't claim to be a Texan . . .hmmm, I'm from the South and I don't claim to be a cracker/southerner/whatever either. But I will get offended if you call me a "Yank" . . . don't "yank" me around now, ya hear???

I've never heard that one before, can't be too common. That said people don't usually refer to pubs as "Bars" in the UK.

Jack Tar is a slang term for sailors in the UK.
