I would, but I'm from Sweden, where it takes about a week to get a passport. I know that some countries take months to produce a new passport, in which case I wouldn't wait.

If you fill out your timeline, you can get better answers based on your circumstances. Filling out your timeline also help give accurate processing times etc for everyone on VJ.

my wife and i were just married a few weeks back and it is asking for a passport number in this form. should we wait to file until she receives her new passport with her updated last name and passport number?

Hold your horses.  Read the questions on the form CAREFULLY and only answer the ones that are applicable.  You are asking your question in a VISA related forum, so it is reasonable for me to assume your spouse is NOT in the USA at this moment, or will not be when you file the petition.  The place the foreigner's passport number is asked for is in the section you fill out only if the foreigner is actually IN the USA NOW.

I am asking this because my wife is canadian. She is not in the united states as she lives in canada still but we are in a border town where we cross frequently (at least 3 times a week).

Question 45 (BENEFICIARY's ENTRY INFORMATION) says. WAS The beneficiary ever in the US. i am checking the box saying YES, because she has traveled to the US. question 47 asks for passport number which i am filling out, correct? Canadian's do not need VISA's to cross the border as long as they have intentions to go back and stay under a certain amount of days per year.

Thoughts?

You know what?  I think the new form does mean for you to provide this information.  In past editions, it was clear this information was only asked for in the context of being in the USA currently, but although I think their intention is the same in this regard, they don't make it clear, so I would go ahead and complete from 47 on.  I hate these new forms.
