How do you if you will have a name change or not during the n-400 interview? My last name consists of two parts e.g. Mac Cormick but I have also used MacCormick due to field limitations on the ID.  The IO said he will use the one without the space. I asked if this will require a judicial ceremony and he said no. Do you sign an extra form when you request the name change through judicial ceremony ? I only signed one paper with the information that will go on the certificate.

Any input is greatly appreciated.

The IO will probably use your name as it shows on your birth certificate / passport / green card / SSN card. The fact that you had a space limit on your DL, it shouldn't suddenly change the way your name is typed in general.

The name change is moreso for the folks that want to go from John Smith to John Alex Smith or Steve Smith or Steve Mars etc .... so basically something very different than your current name where you would need a court to certify that the person that today identifies as John Smith is the same person that will further on be known as Steve Mars if this makes sense.....

In the case of name change due to marriage you would not need a judicial ceremony either as the marriage certificate is the proof of name change.

Hope this helps.
