I just recently got back from Vietnam, but I forgot to bring some very important documents to my fiancee. Does anyone know what's the safest way to mail to VN ? Last time i tried USPS and they told me that it will be in VN within a week but she received the package more than a month later. I notice that she uses EMS to send most of her mail to me and will check to see if there's an EMS here in Wichita, KS.

DO NOT use USPS for anything important. US will probably get it there, VN post is horrible.

Use DHL. They operate throughout Vietnam, including places FedEx won't.

P.S. "EMS" is just what the Vietnamese post calls "Express" or air mail. Our equivalent would be priority mail.

If you're just sending love letters, use standard air mail from the U.S. (84 cents I think). If it's important documents ... use DHL.

Yellow,

I echo 3AD. Vietnam post here is terrible. Try to avoid if you can.

I live/work in Vietnam and have had packages mailed to me through USPS a couple times, and I'll tell you the experience was more than I wanted.

If your looking for quality, reliability and quickness, go with DHL, FedEX or UPS. They are all here in Vietnam.

If my girl is in Saigon, I am assuming then Fed Ex is just fine? They are very convenient for me. DHL is not.

Matt,

FedEX is perfectly fine for HCMC (a.k.a. Saigon). We've received FedEX numerous times here at the office in HCMC.

Wow. I've checked DHL and Fedex rates and it'll cost around $45 just to mail documents. Does this price sound about right ?

You can save some money on that if you use USPS Global Express Guaranteed. This is a service that USPS contracts out to Fedex. Everything goes through the Fedex system, but you save money by using USPS. I sent some documents through USPS GXG on a Friday in the US and it arrived at my wife's HCMC address three days later.

Prices start at $32 for documents.

USPS Global Express. Screw Fedex and their overtaxed rates and especially screw UPS. USPS actually uses DHL on the Vietnam end and if you buy the Global Express you can send it for under 20 bucks in 3 days. I have done it several times. The USPS also offers airmail and claims it to be 7-10 day service but this is the worldwide average and to VN takes about 3 weeks. IF you use the cheapo surface it will get there without a hitch in about 6 weeks.

Thanks sweetiewynn,

I just went with DHL about 2 days ago for $43.70 to Hue. They say it'll arrive in Hue in 6 business days, in Ho Chi Minh City in 3 business days .

I've sent quite a few things by USPS Global Express to Bien Hoa. Documents and packages. They always arrived within 7-10 days.

I once tried FedEx. It arrived in about the same but for 2-3 times the price of USPS. I also learned that USPS basically uses FedEx international routes anyway. (Told to me by the FedEx manager who was helping me send the package.)

USPS is the same thing but for a cheaper price. They may not have the slick marketing campaign as the private companies. But you save on postage since they don't have such overhead.
