As a 49ers and Red Wings fan, I miss the days. LOL.

 

Before you ask, from California, and dad (who introduced me to hockey) is from Livonia (Michigan). I still have a bunch of UofM sweaters fam would always pointlessly send me.

 

Mom is from Nuremberg Germany so I'm also a Bayern Munich and DFB fan. At least FCB have a shot this year haha.

 

Point is, enjoy it while it lasts.

I used to love going to Wings games, but it became sort of boring.  I blame Bettman.

LOL. I never got to see them at the Joe, but I did see them numerous times at the Shark tank.. all but one time winning. Of course, that one time the Wings lost the Sharks fans were mouthy as all hell.

 

It's ok though, I laughed my way through the 90s at how terrible that team was (esp with their whiny announcers Hahn and Remenda), then the 2000s and even now as they can't seem to win a cup.

 

I remember the last Wings cup in 08 I was at work, staying after my shift to watch the rest of the game and celebrate with coworkers at the win. Went straight to Dave and Busters and got hammered.

My best memory at the Joe was game 6 of the 1998 Western Confernece Finals with the Wings defeating the Dallas Stars to put themselves in the Stanley Cup finals.  When the game came about I was a little sad since we had the next game tickets in our group and I wanted to see a Stanley Cup Final game, but to see them win a series at the Joe was better than the first game of the Cup Finals, the only thing better would have been to see them win the Cup in Detroit.  The Joe was electric that night that I still remember it almost 20 years later!

Sadly the 97 and 98 finals were very anti-climactic. The Freep Cup paper my family sent me in 1997 was thrown away by my mother too when cleaning house. I was so pissed. And speaking of pissed, I'll never forget in high school back in the Bay Area, California, I was banned from wearing a Brendan Shanahan jersey in 98 because of a Hispanic gang liked to use the number 14 and in red, and they complained about my jersey.. with the school listening.. to a gang. Unbelievable even 20 years later.

 

My fav series of all time is still the 97 and 2002 Wings vs. Avalanche WCF's. Chasing Roy again in 2002 G7 blowout brought me back to his Habs days. Does the NHL even have rivalries anymore? Seems like they've cut out everything interesting about hockey with all this stupid safety hysteria.

 

The NFL seems to have gone that route too but since its inception as the No Fun League it's been pretty apparent that Nanny Football League has been where they're headed for years.
