Dual Citizenship on the Brain

SO! Who else out there is planning to live/get residency/get citizenship in your spouse's country after he/she gain citizenship here? We certainly are. I have been filling my days reading up on the residency and citizenship requirements and process for Nicaragua while printing out monthly statements and collecting other docs in preparation for ROC.

What are your reasons for wanting to live in their country or pursue a status? What are your reasons for not? What would be the best thing(s) about living there?

 

Our is ease of travel between countries. I wouldn't have to live as a perpetual tourist by leaving the country every 3 months to renew the tourist visa when we live down there for extended periods of time.

We don't really need me to be a citizen over to her country because,we as USC's don't need a visa to visit the Netherlands up to 90 days every 120. Plus i only have so many weeks of vacation time ;P

 

So the money and effort spent would not be worth it.

that's nice that you don't have a limited visa. Is cost of living about the same in the Netherlands?

It's pretty close to the same cost. I do think its a little on the cheaper side to live in the NL though.

It's really cramped the Netherlands is so tiny of a country but so many people ;o

I lived with my husband in Peru for two years before we got married. I'd like him to get us citizenship as soon as possible so that we can move away and come back as we wish, but to be honest I don't really see myself living in Peru again for any length of time. It's a beautiful country and we lived in a historic city, but overall the frustrations and limitations of life in a developing country far outweighed any charm. I also frankly felt boxed in there, stifled. His family was also quite overbearing (by my standards). I'm sure things could be different in a different area perhaps, with different jobs/living situation, but I'm not too keen. 

 

I got a work visa quite easily there, and it's very easy to get a spousal visa (through a type of in-country AOS), plus they are very lax on tourist visas, so I dont worry too much about getting in and out. Getting citizenship requires living there with a spousal visa for several years so is off the table. 

 

Have you spent lots of time in Nicaragua? It's great that you like it there - if planning on a life split between both countries, I think dual citizenship makes a lot of sense.

Yeah Nicaragua's tourist visa is so lax too. As long as you leave the country every 90 days there's no prob; most people take a few days to go to Costa Rica and come back. People live there for DECADES as perpetual tourists and work (which they aren't supposed to do) which I feel like is cheating in some way. As long as I live in the country for 6 non-consecutive months out of the year the path to citizenship through marriage I think is 3 years or so if I am reading stuff right. The documents one must attain for residency seems to require some foot work but already knowing what I will need gives us an advantage. 

 

OOOOOOOOOOOH yes Nicaragua is very much my second home. I am often mistaken for a chela, a light-skinned person from the northern part of Nicaragua as i have picked up the Nica accent in my Spanish. We already know what area we are gonna build our house at . Life is just so much more simpler (and way cheaper let's be real) down there. Having kids is cheaper, health care is way cheaper and still very great quality doctors, cheaper food etc. But I can go on and on why it's my favorite country....

 

What about kids/future kids? Ours will get automatic citizenship: Jus Sangui-something, from their parent so with the kids we plan on getting both passports right away. I must admit I read through Nicaragua's constitution to make sure of this. Found out that a Nicaraguan can't lose their citizenship so that's cool, nothing to worry about when we get his citizenship.

 Do you have that option for your kids? Is that something you will do or have done?
